What do you get when you put together bbq and bike riders? A really good time, with lots of miles and plenty of good cheer to go around. I had the immense privilege of witnessing all of that and more at the recent Tour de BBQ event in Kansas City. (And maybe nosh on some delicious bites from a few favorite barbecue restaurants, too!)

Tour de BBQ

The event is so unique in that it’s not a race. In fact, the last thing from it. The only thing making you ride faster is the wafting smell of barbecue at the next stop. 🙂  The rest stops for each route, of which you can choose the 15, 35 or 62-mile tour, are some of KC’s most amazing barbecue restaurants. Riders are treated with a sample of their offerings, and then there’s the finish line party with even more barbecue and an outdoor concert. The camaraderie was awesome at each stop — a huge sense of community and support for one another.

What I love about the event is that it’s more than a ride. Funds raised by riders benefit the Midwest Cancer Alliance’s Transitions Clinic. Tour de BBQ’s support allows a nurse navigator to assist adolescents as they transition from pediatric to adult oncology treatment. It’s a partnership between KU Cancer Center & Children’s Mercy Hospital. This is where the event strikes so close to home. It’s staggering to think about how many of our friends and family who have been — or will be — affected by cancer at some point in our lifetimes.

Some ride for the barbecue, some ride just for fun, some ride with swag. 😉

This group’s enthusiasm was totally awesome!

I thought it might be fun to get a few action shots of the riders too. I’d love to put together a photo tips post if you want to learn how to capture FAST action like this! (hollar in the comments, okay?)

But really, the rest stops are the best part. What better way to recharge your batteries when your legs are tired and your belly starts growling? Sweet, delicious BBQ to the rescue! Here’s a few of the rest stops we visited on the Long Stack (35 mile) route:

I felt really privileged to be part of this year’s event! If you have the opportunity to ride or support the tour in the future, you’ll go home with a full tummy and a grateful heart. Cheers!
