I am SO excited to share a behind-the-scenes look from Growing CONFIDENCE in Topeka, Kansas! As I’ve taught photography workshops for women this past year, it’s been powerful to see the transformation behind the lens of each woman who walks through the door. Each of them has hoped to be empowered with her camera, to learn how to turn off the AUTO and turn on the AWESOME. And not only have they learned how to capture the story for their families, they’re doing so with confidence, and will never need to go back to the green box ever again!
Before the workshop one of the attendees mentioned to me that she felt like her camera was always in control. Do you ever feel that way when you’re taking photographs of your kids? When you’re photographing in Auto, your camera thinks it’s setting itself up for success, because it chooses everything for you. But there’s so much more freedom when we break through the intimidation of learning how to use our camera better. After everything she had learned through Growing CONFIDENCE, she walked away feeling like she had taken back the power over her camera settings!
We cozied ourselves into the Wolfe’s classroom for the morning and talked about the not-so-scary technical elements of what your camera can do — little adjustments to your camera settings to make a big difference, the benefits of different lenses, and my favorite, the trifecta of ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture. We busted out the glow sticks (dance party!!) and used the flower shop adjacent to Wolfe’s classroom to practice shooting in Manual. In the bottom image they were figuring out how to slow down their shutter speed to capture the water as it was flowing out of the fountain. I was totally having a proud mama bear moment! 🙂
After a delicious lunch at Lupita’s in Downtown Topeka (seriously, yum) the ladies learned how to use lighting and composition to enhance the story. They had some serious lightbulb moments as we talked about creating photo stories of their own kiddos, and things to anticipate as we prepared for our hands-on practice time during the afternoon. And then our beautiful babies and mamas arrived!
Wolfe’s studio was an awesome place to photograph — we made our studio lights look like yummy window light, and had LOADS of awesome lenses for the ladies to experiment with. Combine that with their new ability to photograph in Manual, and look at these GORGEOUS images!
Look at this sweet face! I love how Michelle framed his adorable features so perfectly. Awesome composition!
She also created this gorgeous photograph of his little feet in mama’s hands! I LOVE how his little toes are the highlight of this image. So adorable!
I couldn’t help but jump in for a couple of frames too… such a beautiful connection between the two of them!
Our next mama and baby model arrived, and the ladies loved photographing this little man who had smiles for MILES. Michelle caught this moment of both of them giggling (er, was it something I said?)! How cute are those bright eyes and HUGE smile?
Baby smooches are simply the best, aren’t they? This is an adorable moment between the two of them that Michelle captured!
Mackenzie saw this awesome, intimate moment of quietness — the emotion makes my heart flutter!
His purple elephant brought those smiles right back! Mackenzie was shooting all of this in Manual, adjusting her settings with fearlessness to get the shot!
While we were photographing, mama mentioned that one of their favorite things to do together is play airplane… and his face is SO cute when he comes in for a smooch! I couldn’t resist.
To say I’m proud of what these women learned is an understatement. They broke through the barriers that had been holding them back when it came to photographing their own kiddos, and I’m so excited to see them as they continue on their journey to greater CONFIDENCE! I LOVED spending the day with these beautiful women and want to celebrate them for taking the opportunity to learn their camera better! Way to go, ladies! 🙂 And HUGE thanks to Wayne and the staff at Wolfe’s Camera for their hospitality and everything to help make it a great day!
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your camera, make plans now to join me for a workshop this fall! You’ll break through creative boundaries and turn off AUTO once and for all, as you step into CONFIDENCE!
